The most challenging and risky excavation and construction operations of the Eurasia Crossing Project (İstanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing) which will alleviate heavy traffic between continents as an additional road crossing with the capacity around 100.000 light vehicles/day and decrease the travel time of very busy route from 100 to 15 minutes, has been successfully completed; ahead of schedule. With the breakthrough of the Tunnel Boring Machine after 3.344 meters of boring under the sea, the Eurasia Crossing saw the light at the end of the tunnel.
The tunnel boring works started from the Asian continent on April 19th 2014, in Haydarpaşa. The specifically developed Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) blazed a trail in Turkey by proceeding 8 to 10 meters a day and performing 3.344 meters length of boring below the seabed. The road and engineering structures’ construction is in progress at the completed highway tunnels. Eurasia Crossing will connect Kazlıçeşme and Göztepe. While the travel time at the very busy route will decrease from 100 to 15 minutes, it will ensure a safe and comfortable journey. With the Eurasia Crossing, Turkey will be home to one of the world’s most significant engineering works. The most essential benefits of the project are ‘reduced travel time’ and relief to existing crossings thereby ‘reduced emissions’, economy through ‘less fuel consumption’ and ‘reduced travel time for users and nonusers’.
The excavation work has been accomplished by the attendance of Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, Turkish Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Feridun Bilgin, Former Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Lütfi Elvan, Director General of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Communications Infrastructure Investments Fatih Turan, Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Kadir Topbaş, Governor of Istanbul Vasip Şahin, Yapı Merkezi Holding Chairman Ersin Arıoğlu, ATAŞ Chairman Başar Arıoğlu, ATAŞ CEO Seok Jae Seo and the project team.
The tunnel excavation work of the Eurasia Crossing Project under the Bosphorus, tendered to Yapı Merkezi and SK E&C, with Build-Operate-Transfer model by General Directorate of Infrastructure Investments of Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications has been completed.
