Building Happiness Is Our Happiness

The Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Malaba-Kampala (Eastern Line) Railway Project in Uganda was Held.

On October 14, 2024, the agreement for the Malaba-Kampala (Eastern Line) Railway Project was signed, and the groundbreaking ceremony was held on November 21, 2024, in Tororo. The ceremony was attended by Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni, the Ambassador of Turkey to Kampala Mehmet Fatih Ak, Vice Chairman of Yapı Merkezi’s Board of Directors Dr. Erdem Arıoğlu, and the General Manager of Yapı Merkezi Construction Mustafa Kopuz.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Erdem Arıoğlu, Vice Chairman of Yapı Merkezi Construction’s Board of Directors, said: "We are gathered here not only to launch this iconic project, but also to celebrate a transformative project that will connect nations, stimulate economic growth, and strengthen the ties between our countries. At Yapı Merkezi, we are extremely proud to bring over 50 years of experience in railway construction to this project. The work we are doing here is built upon the strong foundations we have established in many countries across Africa, from Tanzania to Algeria, and from Ethiopia to Senegal, and we are excited to continue this legacy in Uganda."

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni stated: "If there is more railway transportation within the city, the number of people coming to the city center by car will decrease. This will help ease congestion in the city. The currently operating train is used by a large number of people. With the line to be built by Yapı Merkezi, the travel time, which currently takes 14 days, will be reduced to 24 hours. As delays are resolved, the cost of doing business will also decrease." This project, which will connect Uganda to Kenya and holds strategic importance for East Africa, is one of the largest projects ever signed by Turkish contractors abroad. The 273-kilometer-long line will be designed for a speed of 120 km/h and will include 2 major stations, 4 medium-sized stations, 1 marshalling yard, and 3 freight terminals. The project will pass through challenging terrains and include 2.1 kilometers of tunnels and 2.3 kilometers of viaducts. The Jinja Bridge, which will be 552 meters long and built with an inclined suspended system, will also be part of the project and will become a symbol of both the project and Uganda due to its aesthetic features.

We thank all our team members who contributed to the project and wish our new project to bring success to our company and our country.
