The contract for the Yapı Merkezi’s Awash-Weldia/Hara Gabaya Railway Project of 390 km to be constructed in Ethiopia was signed in the capital Addis Ababa on June 26, 2012. Therefore, Yapı Merkezi signed one of the biggest projects to be contracted at abroad ever won by a Turkish construction company without a partner with a budget of 1.7 billion dollars.

The contract was signed by Dr. Getachew Betru, the General Manager of Ethiopia Railway Corporation (ERC) on behalf of Ethiopia and by the Board Member Erdem Arıoğlu and the General Manager Özge Arıoğlu on behalf of Yapı Merkezi and witnessed by Haile Mariam Dessalegn, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister of Ethiopia.
Kenan İpek, Turkey’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Dr. Mulatu Teshome Wirtu, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Turkey and Emre Aykar, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Yapı Merkezi also signed the contract as witnesses. Eximbank Country Credits Department Coordinator Ali Koray Erden and Directorate of Turkish State Railways Research, Planning and Coordination Department Branch Manager Abdullah Çorak also attended the signing ceremony as witnesses.
Ahmet Çivi, Murat Köksal and Murat Kenkül were also present in the ceremony and Dr. Getachew, Emre Aykar, Haile Mariam Dessalegn and Kenan İpek each delivered speeches.
Yapı Merkezi will strengthen the ties between Ethiopia and Turkey
The project to be constructed as a single line of 389 km will start from the North East of Awash city then head to North and reach Weldia via Kombolcha.
The railway to be constructed as part of an important project to connect Northern and Eastern economic and traffic corridor will contribute to passenger and cargo traffic as well as support import and export through Djibuti Port. The railway line will play an important role in connecting north of the country with the center.
Project Details
All design works for the Awash-Weldia/Hara Gabaya Railway Project to be completed in 41 months will be carried out by our company. In addition to 389 km long single line, total railway length to be constructed in the project with 18 km station lines and 40 km maintenance lines will reach 447 km.
Catenary system will be laid down in the main railway line as well as the warehouse and overnight lines. Signalization and telecommunication works will be completed in all lines and stations and an Operation Control Center will be constructed.
There will be 3 terminal stations and 6 intermediate stations. Terminal stations will be built with two platforms whereas intermediate stations will be built with one platform. There will be two main maintenance facilities, maintenance workshop, warehouse, painting workshop, generator rooms, mechanical service and service building, wagon wash facility and office buildings will be built next to stations.
